But this book is so much more than its historical setting. I do not ordinarily read middle-grade books unless I am sharing them with my grandson, but I was drawn to this beautiful book initially because of its subject matter - children in Oakland during the early days of the Black Panther Party. Known for their realistic portrayal of teens of color, Williams-Garcia's works have been recognized by the Coretta Scott King Award Committee, PEN Norma Klein, American Library Association, and Parents' Choice, among others. They hunger for stories that engage them and reflect their images and experiences."Īuthor of four award winning novels, Rita Williams-Garcia continues to break new ground in young people's literature. Writing stories for young people is my passion and my mission. In the midst of real events, I daydreamed and wrote stories. "I learned to read early, and was aware of events going on as I grew up in the 60s. Even now, my daughters call me 'Pokey Mom', because I slow poke around when they want to go-go-go. I like to believe I was dreaming up a good story and wouldn’t budge until I was finished. Although I was her last child, I took my time making my appearance. My mother, Miss Essie, named me 'NoMo' immediately after my birth. "I was born in Queens, N.Y, on April 13, 1957.

But that doesn't stop the rush of desire she feels each time her best friend's brother, notorious rake Gabriel Marlington, crosses her path. Drusilla Clare is full of opinions about why a woman shouldn't marry. Once Raven engages with the humans, their world takes on more color and once Raven brings the sun, the world is illuminated as well. The art is simple but poignant, with vivid colors reserved for Raven while everything else is in muted colors, representing the lack of light or enlightenment. This origin story shares many similarities with other origin stories such as Maui, Prometheus and even Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. Raven steals the run, turns back into a bird and flies into the sky where he throws the sun for all to enjoy. Sky Chief is enamored with Raven and gives Raven whatever he wants, including a shining box which ends up housing the sun. Later on, the girl becomes pregnant and gives birth to Raven. Being the trickster that he is, Raven see a girl drinking water from bowl then Raven changes himself into a pine needle and positions himself to be scooped up into the bowl where the girl then drinks the Raven/pine-needle. Desiring to change this, Raven goes in search of light and finds it at the Sky Chief's lodge. San Diego: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1993 Pictorial boards in matching dust jacket which has some foxing to flaps and verso, original price intact (14.95). The world exists in darkness and Raven is sad for the people. Raven is part Pourqui tale and part trickster tale as it explains how light was brought to the world and it demonstrates the sly wisdom of the raven. You really get drawn into the inner world of Wanderer (the parasite) and Melanie (the host) and her interactions with the other humans in the story. The Host is different though and I enjoyed the character development and the relationships that formed between the characters. I’ve not actually read a book about body-snatchers before but I’ve seen plenty of films and they are usually all action and suspense with completely wooden and flat characters. Earth is not the first planet the parasites have colonised and colonisation has never posed a problem before! Stephenie Meyer has created a wonderfully inventive and imaginative backdrop of life on other planets with senses, experiences and colours beyond our wildest imagination. The Host is more than just a typical body-snatching action horror story though. That sounds pretty cheesy (and it is), so moving along swiftly… The book is full of the wonder of humanity, the thrill of our senses and the blessings of the human experience. They never counted on Melanie Stryder though, a human host who refuses to give in. They have the misguided belief that humanity is wasted on humans and that they can do a better job of running Earth than we ever did. The premise isn’t entirely original: worm-like parasites attach themselves to the central nervous systems of human hosts making them nothing more than puppets. The Host by Stephenie Meyer is just the type of body-snatching, brink of the extinction of humankind type of science fiction tale I’ve always loved. Perfectly positioned to bridge the gap between people of color and white Americans struggling with race complexities, Oluo answers the questions readers don't dare ask, and explains the concepts that continue to elude everyday Americans. The phrase 'Catch-22', symbolizing the absurdity of all institutional logic, has become a permanent part of our language" (NYPL Books of the Century 177). Many consider the novel to be the definitive statement of the modern antiwar position. By the mid-1960's, it had become a cult classic among counterculture activists for its biting indictments of war. When the novel appeared in 1961, World War II veterans appreciated its satire of the military bureaucracy and chaos of war. In Heller's World War II, a supplies manager has more power than a general, and anyone seeking a discharge on the grounds of insanity is declared sane enough to keep on fighting. "Catch-22, Joseph Heller's first and best-known novel, depicts a military world turned upside down. Octavo, bound in full leather, gilt titles to the spine, front and rear panels, all edges gilt, silk endpapers, illustrated by Robert Andrew Parker. In 1985, Yale Tishman, the development director for an art gallery in Chicago, is about to pull off an amazing coup, bringing in an extraordinary collection of 1920s paintings as a gift to the gallery.
